advanced polymer materials: proton-, electronic- and ionic conducting polymers, high performance polymers, conjugated polymers, cross-linked polymers, interpenetrating polymer networks, polymeric Ionic Liquids, functional polymer materials for Li batteries, solar cells, fuel cells, gas separation membranes and electrochromic devices.

polymer synthesis: polycondensation, polymerization, ROMP, cyclopolymerization, electropolymerization, vapor phase polymerization, polycyclodehydratation, etc. Chemistry of macromolecular compounds.


Associated Prof. Dr. Alexander S. Shaplov is an author of 45 papers in peer reviewed journals (including 2 reviews), 4 patents, 2 book chapters, 32 posters and 40 oral lectures (included 9 invited talks) on Russian and International conferences.

Implementation of subsequent diploma, PhD and Doctor of Science theses. The study of novel methods for polymer formulation, obtaining of practical experience in the basic methods of organic synthesis, various polymerization and polycondensation reactions. Polycondensation catalysis. Implementation of Ionic Liquids as solvents, catalysts, fillers and modifying agents in polymers and materials chemistry. Synthesis of high performance polymers including polyimides, polyamides, poly(1,3,4-oxadiazole)s, poly(1,2,4-triazole)s, etc. having tailored structures and properties, namely, thermal, electric, film forming, solubility, etc. Fabrication of polymer membranes for fuel sells, solar cells, Li batteries, etc. Polyelectrolytes synthesis and characterization. Preparation of various cross-linked networks, including interpenetrating networks, ionic ones in particular. Development of polymeric ionic liquids and materials on their basis as solid polyelectrolytes. INTAS (Independent International Association formed by the European Community), RFBR (Russian Foundation for Basic Research), OPCW (Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons), DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), SNCF (Swiss National Science Foundation), FP7 (European 7th Framework Program, Marie Curie action), Foundation for Russian Science Assistance grants executor.

Detailed study of the obtained films, including their ionic conductivity, thermal properties, interaction with Li salts, electrochemical windows, application as membrane separators in Li batteries, etc. (FP7, European 7th Framework Program, Marie Curie action, International Research Staff Exchange Scheme (FP7-PEOPLE-2012-IRSES, project no. 318873 «IONRUN») and sponsorship of Université de Cergy Pontoise).
